*Comment here after every three chapters
*Start your post with the name of the chapters you are commenting about (ex. I just finished reading chapters 4-6).
*PLEASE try to respond to each other’s comments so we can get a conversation going =)

    The books are….

Herbert’s Wormhole by Peter Nelson and Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen

Let us know which book you want to read. You can check the book out of the library or buy it…doesn’t matter to me. Let’s give everyone until the end of the week to get a copy of their preferred book, then we’ll start reading this weekend.

Hope you had a great Independence Day! =)

    Voting time!

After reading some of your suggestions, I have found a few books that you guys might like. Which would you like to read?

    Herbert’s Wormhole by Peter Nelson
Summary: When almost-sixth-grader Alex, a video game fanatic, is forced on a “playdate” with his neighbor Herbert, an inventor, the two travel to the twenty-second century and face off against aliens, who are not as beneficent as most people think.

Chasing Vermeer by by Blue Balliett ; with artwork by Brett Helquist
Summary: When seemingly unrelated and strange events start to happen and a precious Vermeer painting disappears, eleven-year-olds Petra and Calder combine their talents to solve an international art scandal.
Hot and Cold Summer by Johanna Hurwitz
Summary: Two inseparable 10-year-old boys discover there is room in their friendship for another person and it really doesn’t matter that she is a girl. This one is kind of old, but it is well reviewed.

    Highway Cats by Janet Lisle
Summary: A hard-bitten group of mangy highway cats is changed forever after the mysterious arrival of three kittens.

When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead
Summary: As her mother prepares to be a contestant on the 1980s television game show, “The 20,000 Pyramid,” a twelve-year-old New York City girl tries to make sense of a series of mysterious notes received from an anonymous source that seems to defy the laws of time and space.

Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen
Summary: Ruby hasn’t had much success with family. Her father left; her protective older sister, Cora, left; and her boozing mother finally leaves, too. Ruby is alone until Cora learns of her situation and swoops in. Suddenly, Ruby finds herself living with Cora and her wealthy brother-in-law, attending private school, and wondering just where she fits in. As in previous books, Dessen takes on a central theme—here the meaning of family—and spins many plots and subplots around it. Most prominent yet least successful is the thread about Cora’s relationship with boy-next-door Nate, who rescues her when she needs it, but has difficulty accepting Ruby’s help, tentative at first, when she discovers he’s being physically abused. Nate seems too good to be true (as does Cora’s husband), while his father is a caricature. And one of the most important elements, the issue of the girls’ mother lying to them, gets lost. Despite the uneven narrative, Dessen’s writing can be beautiful, and her story is involving.

Well, what do you think? Visit our WallWisher site to cast your vote: http://www.wallwisher.com/wall/bookninjas

    Great ideas!

You guys are doing great with the WallWisher page! Do you like it? I think it’s pretty sweet…and they are easy to make. You can keep making suggestions for the next day or so.

It looks like we have four boys and five girls. What do you think about having the boys read a book, and the girls read a different book? It looks like the girls are into romance, funny, and fantasy, while the boys seem to agree on adventure and suspense (scary). Do I have that right?

Let me know what you think about having two different books. I want to pick books by the end of the week so you can go to the library/bookstore and pick up your copy this weekend.

Also, you guys need to talk to each other! You can reply to any post on this page, so start some conversations. That’s the fun part of the online book club…meeting new people =)
