After reading some of your suggestions, I have found a few books that you guys might like. Which would you like to read?
Herbert’s Wormhole by Peter Nelson
Summary: When almost-sixth-grader Alex, a video game fanatic, is forced on a “playdate” with his neighbor Herbert, an inventor, the two travel to the twenty-second century and face off against aliens, who are not as beneficent as most people think.
Chasing Vermeer by by Blue Balliett ; with artwork by Brett Helquist
Summary: When seemingly unrelated and strange events start to happen and a precious Vermeer painting disappears, eleven-year-olds Petra and Calder combine their talents to solve an international art scandal.
Hot and Cold Summer by Johanna Hurwitz
Summary: Two inseparable 10-year-old boys discover there is room in their friendship for another person and it really doesn’t matter that she is a girl. This one is kind of old, but it is well reviewed.
Highway Cats by Janet Lisle
Summary: A hard-bitten group of mangy highway cats is changed forever after the mysterious arrival of three kittens.
When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead
Summary: As her mother prepares to be a contestant on the 1980s television game show, “The 20,000 Pyramid,” a twelve-year-old New York City girl tries to make sense of a series of mysterious notes received from an anonymous source that seems to defy the laws of time and space.
Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen
Summary: Ruby hasn’t had much success with family. Her father left; her protective older sister, Cora, left; and her boozing mother finally leaves, too. Ruby is alone until Cora learns of her situation and swoops in. Suddenly, Ruby finds herself living with Cora and her wealthy brother-in-law, attending private school, and wondering just where she fits in. As in previous books, Dessen takes on a central theme—here the meaning of family—and spins many plots and subplots around it. Most prominent yet least successful is the thread about Cora’s relationship with boy-next-door Nate, who rescues her when she needs it, but has difficulty accepting Ruby’s help, tentative at first, when she discovers he’s being physically abused. Nate seems too good to be true (as does Cora’s husband), while his father is a caricature. And one of the most important elements, the issue of the girls’ mother lying to them, gets lost. Despite the uneven narrative, Dessen’s writing can be beautiful, and her story is involving.
